About LimeWorks.us

LimeWorks.us is a full-service supply company committed to providing the resources you need for performing professional masonry restoration and to build sustainable structures.

Many historic masonry buildings which are over 100 years old are just receiving their first repointing work. These old buildings were usually built with only lime and sand for mortar. The well built historic buildings are considered sustainable due to the longevity of their service as opposed to the waste caused by rapid cycles of obsolescence in buildings such as the modern strip mall.

The details in how all substantial and beautiful historic masonry buildings were made allows many of these old structures to last for centuries and even for millennia throughout the world. Modern Portland cement mortars have had many known failures as a primary or gauged-in binder to lime mortar used in masonry preservation efforts of these old masonry buildings.

However, the correct lime and sand mortar mix has always been very durable and cost effective by achieving its long service life for the buildings they serve. When new mortars with duplicate properties as that of old materials are used to repair and repoint buildings, or to build new ones, then the final life-cycle assessment of the replacement materials will be as equally impressive as that of the historically time-proven materials. Using materials with an outstanding durability in their service life is a property of Green Building Technology.

Why Lime?

The National Park Service's National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) Podcast interview with Andrew deGruchy:

"Historic Uses of Lime Mortar, and Its Continuing Importance Today"

Where to Use?

The Ecologic™ line of Natural Hydraulic Lime sanded mortars is a logical one-step choice for building and restoring. Ecologic™ mortar can be used suitably for many applications where type N or O mortars would otherwise be used, such as:

Repointing Brick and Stone Buildings

Before paint strip and patch pointing

After paint strip and patch pointing

Laying up brick, stone, terra cotta and other masonry units

Before

After

Scratch and Brown Coats For External Stucco Over Traditional Wood Lath or Wire Mesh, Straw Bale, Adobe and Cob using Natural Hydraulic Lime

Before

After

Finished color coats for external stucco (render)

Private residence, Sonoma County, California

Finished color coats for internal lime plaster. (Can even be used over regular sheet rock using Takcoat™ transitional coat beforehand)

Venetian plaster for a private residence

With the addition of NHL 2 deGruchy's Mortar (F) can be polished into true Venetian plasters with a mirror-like finish at a fraction of the cost of imported Italian lime putty.

Mortar / Plaster Recipes & Colors

Simple Recipes For Making Compatible Repointing Mortar, Historic Masonry Repair Mortars, Stucco and Plaster using Ecologic™ Mortar.

Common Bond in Brickwork

Upper: Modern, stiff mud, wire cut standard 7-5/8 face brick pointed with mortar struck flat or as a flush joint to show aggregates

Mortar Mix: 1 part Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM 200 (brown/grayish) 2lbs washed coal flecks, (or medium grade slag flecks). (2lbs)

Lower: Historic, stiff mud, wire cut smooth Philadelphia Brick, an 8-1/4 face brick with Buttered joint

Mortar Mix: Use either Ecologic™ Butter Joint premix of 1:2 mixture of NHL 2 to Marble Dust by Volume

Finish Tools - 3/8" slicker, 1/8" slicker, 1/16" slicker

Carolina variegated sandstone pointed in a Beveled Ridge joint

Mortar Mix: Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM 50

Finish Tools - 3/8" slicker, 1/2" slicker

Variegated siliceous Iron stone pointed in a Raised and Ruled White Ribbon joint over a neutral colored background mortar brushed flat

Background
Mortar Mix:
Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM GREY

White Ribbon
Mortar Mix:
Use either Ecologic™ Butter Joint premix or 1:2 mixture of NHL 2 to Marble Dust by Volume

Finish Tools - 1/2" slicker, Wire Duster and 1/2" ribbon jointer and a loop

Diopsidic sandstone (Serpentine-like (green) pointed in a Cobweb Ribbon (cobweb also Serpentine-like (curves)!)

Mortar Mix: Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM GREY

Finish Tools - 1/2" slicker, Wire Duster and 1/2" ribbon jointer and a loop

Limonitic sandstone (yellowish brown) pointed in a Grapevine Stone joint, (not to be confused with the commonly named grapevine joint in brickwork where in that case an incised 1/8 line is impressed into the wet mortar when striking with a grapevine jointer tool.)

Mortar Mix: 1/2 part Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM 100 1/2 part Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM 250 (greenish ochre-brown colored)

Finish Tools - 1/2" slicker, 1/2" Stone Grapevine Jointer

Appalachian Bluestone (a sedimentary sandstone) pointed in a **Beveled Ridge joint which had the yellow sand aggregates exposed for a weathered appearance

Mortar Mix: 1 part Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM 100 (light brown/mud colored) 2lbs yellow concrete sand (Inclusions of lime chunks were also added along with the sand aggregate to duplicate the imperfection often seen in weathered mortar where the original lime slaking left bits of calcium hydroxide not fully broken down in the putty and where weathering reveals such bits. This denotes a "hot mix was used and fresh slack lime had sand added then used immediately). Mix NHL 5 and water, let it harden a week and break it up to add small bits.

Exterior, weathered, (by exposing aggregates) brown coat plaster (AKA stucco, render). Inclusions of lime chunks (see note above) were dashed into the wet plaster

Mortar Mix: 1 part Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM 100 (light brown/mud-colored) 2lbs part brown concrete sand

Tools for Panel 6- 3/8" slicker

Tools for Panel 7- Stucco and Harling trowels, Churn brush and garden hose with water to expose aggregate the next day.

Pennsylvania's Rockhill Granite, (trappe rock), pointed in a **Beveled Ridge joint which had the reddish/brown sand aggregates exposed for a distressed and weathered appearance

Mortar Mix: 1 part Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM 100 (light brown/mud colored) 1-3/4 lbs brown concrete sand 1/4 lb medium grade slag flecks

Finish Tools - 1/2" slicker, Churn brush and garden hose with water to expose aggregate the next day.

Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill Stone (Wissahickon Schist), pointed in a **Beveled Ridge joint

Mortar Mix: 1 part Ecologic™ Mortar G #DGM 250 (greenish ochre-brown colored) 1 ounce of mica fleck inclusions added to simulate the Pennsylvania's Schuylkill River sand which has naturally occurring shist fleck inclusions.

Finish Tools - 1/2" slicker, Churn brush

Note to those in Mt. Airy Region of Philadelphia- The above mix, or substituting DGM 200, is a good match for most Wissahickon Schist repointing work needed on buildings built before 1940.

Workshops
We offer workshops every second Friday of the new month.

Send Us A Sample
You can send us a sample of historic mortar or a sample of historic brownstone, limestone or brick and we will not charge you to take a look at it. We will call you and talk to you about our initial observations and about your application also without cost. We may be able to make a recommendation as to which stock material we carry will complement the composition and simulate the color of the sample you sent. Use this form

If you would like a color-simulated brick, stone or mortar sample sent using St. Astier Lithomex, (Brick and Stone patching material) or a custom Ecologic™ Pointing, Building or Stucco Mortar we charge $125 per sample. We will send to you a dried tile and approximately two-pounds of sample mix in order for you to verify that the mix is correct when you mix it with water and install it. If you approve the sample you install then you can order the quantities of custom material you will require to do the job. Use this form

Schedule a Site Visit
Scheduling an Initial Site Visit is to arrange an appointment with deGruchy Masonry, Inc., who does fulfillment work for the LimeWorks.us product line including other materials appropriate for your application, to come to your site and meet with you and/or your representatives.

This visit is required to better understand the objective and diagnose the need in order to then make case specific recommendations so that an estimate can be produced to carry out the recommendations. If no estimate is required or can be produced then the objective of the visit is to help you have a better baseline understanding of your vintage building and know what to listen for when interviewing other professionals who will suggest their remedies to you so that you can weigh the options and make an informed decision.

Please see the map and corresponding fees posted below. NOTE - No charge for non-profit church organizations in zones 1-4.

The nationwide services of deGruchy Masonry, Inc. include peer reviews of masonry restoration specifications designed by architects, conservators and masons. Through education, training and quality assurance programs deGruchy Masonry, Inc. and their affiliates will work with your local professionals to complete historic preservation projects.

It is highly recommended that you e-mail us some photos of your project. We do not send a bill to look at photographs or to respond to you regarding the information you send. Please include your name, job site address, phone number and a brief description of work needed in the e-mail.

If you would like a site visit consultation outside of the 7 posted zones listed below, we would be happy to provide this service. The fee is $1,250 and includes travel to all states east of the Mississippi line and a partial-day allotment to meet with you and make recommendations for a course of action. Further consulting work could be scheduled if additional services are required. These additional services may include extensive surveys utilizing high reach equipment, additional masonry labor for exploratory work, engineering reports and bid documents prepared.
