Rose Valley, PA Job
Job Description:
Clients from Rose Valley were owners of a early 20th century house designed by the local architect Will Price. Some repairs and alterations had been done by the clients, and they had a wish to complete them in a way that was sympathetic to the original intent of the architect vision for the house. In the sun room the owners added a gas fireplace. On the wall over the fireplace the clients had installed Mercer tile that was similar to the original Mercer tile already used throughout the interior and exterior of the house. The clients desire was to have the wall around the tile plastered to match the existing plaster in the room. To achieve this we used ® Mortar SCG - G coarse mortar mix. This was left unfinished, and textured using a sponge to achieve a finish similar to the existing plaster walls surrounding the new wall. In the living room the clients needed to rebuild the framing supporting the original hearth for the fireplace. In doing so the original Mercer tile hearth was removed after it broke. Also during the hearth renovation a gas fireplace was installed in place of the existing wood fireplace. Again, the clients went back to Mercer tile to find tile that closely matched the existing Mercer tile used on the original hearth. They also picked up tile similar to the blue border tile that was installed at the base of the fireplace wall. These tile were used in conjunction with salvaged original blue tiles to create a new border that now went across the entire bottom of the wall. The new Mercer tile was set in place in a pattern that closely matched the original design of the hearth. For grout we used our Butter Joint mix (a 50 / 50 mixture of NHL 2 and marble dust.) The bright white color of the grout closely matched the painted white grout and plaster on the original fireplace wall. With both renovations completed the owners achieved their desired results that the repairs would be attractive, functional, and sympathetic to the historical fabric of the original house. | View Next Job Back to Topics |
