Description

Juried-Art/MASTER JAM-02 Ecologic™ Brand Family of Repointing Products Certified Installer Professional Boot Camp

3 Day – 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

This 3-day boot camp trains on knowing the difference in lime mortars and when to use them and its intent is not to stamp out counterfeits. This class is about discerning the genuine article of an authentically prepared lime putty supported by sound scientific knowledge and have the hands-on installation practice time that will also show the difference between slaked hot lime and soaked hydrated lime putty mixes, when to use Natural Hydraulic Lime mortars, Mastic, Grout and what ancient additives help to make all Materials Fit for Purpose intended. This boot camp is meant for all dedicated historic restoration masons who want to understand the nuances in this ancient and respected art of the trade. This is a Juried-Art/Master (“JAM”) Certified Installer program that is only for professional restoration masons. Any company sponsoring their masons or any owner/operator of a legitimate masonry company must produce a Certificate of Workers Compensation Insurance in order to join the boot camp and work with the LimeWorks®.us Technical Install Team for this advanced training program.

A skilled and exacting mason can match rebuilt sections of masonry to the original in terms of stone type and size; patterns of jointing and coursing; and mortar color, texture, and profile. Properly done, repointing restores the visual and physical integrity of the masonry. Improperly done, repointing not only detracts from the appearance of the building but may also cause physical damage and decay to the stone or brick. The ultimate success and performance of the repairs depend upon the proper selection of materials and the quality of the work performed by the masons.

This Juried-Art/Master (“JAM”) 02 Certified Installer Professional Bootcamp is designed to elevate the level of craftsmanship of professional masons by training on the full line of Ecologic™ Brand Family of Repointing Products. There is an emphasis on proper mixing, placing, tooling with work simulate surrounding and special joint profiles like ribbon, ridge, weathered ridge, beaded, grapevine or the type of joint profile they need to recreate along with teaching proper care and custody through the sheltering and curing process in order to understand how to handle and install and gain the best service life from a lime mortar.

Regardless of the type of mortar joint being installed, it is essential that existing joint profiles should be followed where encountered in historic restoration projects. The lecture, demonstrations and hands-on exercises cover the properties of natural hydraulic lime, lime putty repointing using hot lime, sand mastic, lime grouts and standard Ecologic™ Mortar and stabilization mortars. Under the guidance of experienced masons from LimeWorks.us, participants will practice their skills on mock-up panels.

Re: Hot Lime Mixes. For at least 7500 years of recorded building history, the use of properly cooked and slaked calcium carbonate (lime) made into Quicklime (AKA Lump lime or Hot lime) was either used immediately in a hot-mixed lime mortar or banked up as “coarse stuff” or retained as pure calcium oxide with the intent to improve it with age by refining its particle size as it was stored in pits. Today there is a resurgence of the use of such “air limes” which only set with air as opposed to “water limes” which set with air and water such as the Natural Hydraulic Limes or Pozzolanic Hydraulic Limes that we offer at LimeWorks®.us for making many of our lime mortars and plasters. With the resurgence of interest in traditionally made historic lime mortar mixes, there are now on the US market substandard variants of “lime putty” mortars available for sale. One substandard variant is simply a soaked hydrated lime putty made from ordinary Type S or Type N hydrated lime. Soaked hydrated lime putty and not properly slaked hot lime putty is only a “ready to fail” lime mortar that is more likened to sticks of sandy chalk placed between vintage brick and stone joinery by the well-meaning but naive mason, specified by a well-meaning but mislead professionals. A bonafide hot lime putty and the lime putty mortars made with them are what is considered proper for all legitimate historic masonry preservation campaigns that call for lime putty to be used by those who know the difference in materials and when to use them.
