Elevate Your Skills With Craftwork Training Center Workshops

Elevate your skill with one of the Craftwork Training Center’s excellent and informative workshops, featuring hands-on instruction and know-how from the LimeWorks.Us team . Here’s a look at what’s coming up next:
Friday, April 17th, at the Craftwork Trading Center:
Introduction to Mineral Paints and Stains
Explore the science and application of mineral coatings, including limewash and potassium silicate paints, to achieve durable, breathable finishes that bond permanently with masonry.
Discover the differences between mineral based coatings as opposed to modern paints when decorating masonry. In this class, you will be shown how to match historic brick and stone colors using potassium silicate paints and stains along with covering the use of whitewash and colored limewash. Learn why breathability is key for exterior coatings on masonry for time-tested results.
This workshop teaches what acceptable paint types are available and what choices you have for projects such as applying a utilitarian coating, changing the color of your masonry, or even planning to paint a mural
Mineral paints and stains are understood to have a chemical bond to all forms of masonry substrates such as brick, stone, mortar, stucco, and cement. Unlike emulsion based paints, mineral paints are non-film-forming and create a permanent bond with masonry when applied correctly. Mineral coatings are the best choice to create a system that works in harmony with new and even vintage masonry.

Learn tips and tricks from professionals on how to remove deteriorated mortar joints and properly restore them with quality workmanship and materials so your restoration stands the test of time!
The decision to repoint a masonry structure is most often related to some obvious signs of deterioration, such as disintegrating mortar, cracks in mortar joints, loose bricks or stones, or damp walls. On the surface, restoration projects may appear straightforward and intuitive, but there’s no substitute for skill and experience. Good repointing practices guarantee the long life of the mortar joint, the wall, and the historic structure. This hands-on workshop introduces the basic principles and work practices needed to repoint vintage brick and/or stone structures using breathable lime mortar supplied by LimeWorks.us. The lecture, demonstrations and hands-on exercises cover the properties of natural hydraulic lime mortars; tips for selecting and mixing lime mortars; and cleaning, filling, repointing, and tooling certain mortar joints. Under the guidance of experienced masons from LimeWorks.us, participants will practice their skills on mock-up panels or historic structures undergoing restoration at our facility. Prior masonry experience is not required.
Learning Objectives:
- Begin to understand the science behind breathable natural hydraulic lime.
- Become aware of proper wall preparation techniques used to remove existing mortar that will create less damage to the surrounding stone and brick
- Review how to mix, place, and cure lime mortar properly.
- Recognize common pointing styles.
- Begin to understand how to fill, repoint, tool, texture, and brush mortar joints to simulate simple pointing profiles.
