ARTisAn® Objective Workshop MAS-15 Introduction to Mineral Paints & Stains
1 day – 8:00 am to 3:00 pm
Discover the history behind and the differences between mineral based coatings to decorate masonry as opposed to using modern paints. This class will demonstrate how to match historic brick and stone colors using potassium silicate paints and stains along with covering the use of whitewash and colored limewash. The complementing lecture will explain why breathability is key for exterior coatings on masonry, and much more. LimeWorks.us is excited to debut this new workshop that teaches what the acceptable paint types are and what choices are available when applying either a utilitarian coating to masonry, changing the color of masonry, or even planning to paint a mural on masonry.
The very basic precept will be discussed where mineral paints and stains are understood to have a chemical bond to all forms of masonry substrates such as brick, stone, mortar, stucco, and cement. Unlike emulsion based paints, mineral paints are non-film-forming and create a permanent bond with masonry when applied correctly. Mineral coatings are the best choice to create a system that works in harmony with new and even vintage masonry.
Ecologic™ Potassium Silicate Paint (PSP) is more opaque and more like the paint coatings that most people are familiar with. Ecologic™ Colorwash Stain, however, is a translucent potassium silicate material that allows the texture of the masonry units or the character defining surface of the masonry units to come through the finish and not be inhibited. Mineral paints and stains can be brushed, rolled or sprayed on. For artistic expressions or when feathering out colors using Ecologic™ Colorwash Stain a sponge may be the appropriate tool to create the right finish.
The goals of the workshop are aimed so that participants can:
- Know the difference between emulsion based paints and mineral based paints.
- Be able to have the theory of color matching paints/stains demonstrated to them.
- Have the opportunity to practice creating custom color blends to match stone and brick.
- Have the opportunity to use certain tools and practice certain techniques when using mineral paints and stains on masonry.
The workshop will be held at the historic Millhafen Farm, 3145 State Road, Telford, PA 18969—the headquarters of Craftwork Training Center and LimeWorks.us. A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required two weeks in advance with the balance due at the beginning of the workshop. All the necessary materials and tools will be supplied and a light lunch is provided for your convenience. The program will start promptly at 8:00 am. Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete the check-in process and come appropriately dressed to use paints and to be prepared for hands-on training by wearing expendable work clothes. To ensure an exceptional learning experience, the class size is limited. However, a minimum of 6 participants is required to hold the workshop. Should a class not reach the minimum participants, we will notify all registered participants of cancellation at least 10 days prior to the workshop date.
