Description

Product Details

Ecologic™ Mortar Product Description:

Mix and Go lime mortar based on NHL 3.5 pre-blended with sand (contains no Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)) to be used for repointing and laying stone and brick.

Available in 16 stock colors and 3 different grades:

  • Coarse(G) to be used for joints over 3/8″
  • Fine (F) to be used for joints between 1/4”-3/8”
  • Butter Joint to be used for joints under 1/4”

deGruchy’s Ecologic™ Mortar, in any of the stock colors, is simply a prepared blend of binder/aggregate/pigments to which you just add water, mix and go to work. Use it on historic buildings to re-point, stucco, parge, and plaster. Ecologic™ Lime Mortar can also be used to lay/re-lay brick, terra cotta, block and stone on modern construction. Ecologic™ Mortar is a “Green” Product and the result is an “Old World” Lime finish that is chemically and physically suitable as a replacement mortar for historic masonry.

Ecologic™ Mortar Benefits

The advantage of the pre-blended material with sand and pigment already added is that the quality control of the mix design is already completed. The mixing can take place on each level of the scaffold, if suitable conditions allow using the drill and paddle mixing method, with no excess sand piles or other bags of material stored on site.

Read more about the benefits of Natural Hydraulic Lime and the issues that develop from repairs done with Portland Cement.

Pre-Blended

deGruchy’s Ecologic™ pre-blended mortar is all you need. Having all the materials in one bag reduces the temptation to add Portland cement, which is customary when a typical Type N mortar is made with local hydrated lime. The pre-blended material ensures that the engineering of the mortar’s final properties is kept in a high-quality control environment with the right sand and the right pigments for consistent color and results.

Mortar Strength

NO Portland Cement is present or needed in deGruchy’s Ecologic™ Mortars yet the stock material will still reach the 750 p.s.i. required for a Type N mortar while maintaining the high permeability required for repointing and repair to historic structures originally built with lime mortars. Due to the lack of Portland cement, Ecologic™ Mortar is immune to sulfates and salts. The alkali-silica reaction does not take place with St. Astier Natural Hydraulic Limes.

Lime Mortar Coverage:

One bag of Ecologic™ Mortar will:

  1. Lay about 40 standard brick
  2. Lay about 10 standard 8″ x 8″ x 16″ block
  3. Repoint about 40 square feet of standard brick joints @ 3/8″ wide and 3/4″ deep
  4. Repoint about 100 lineal feet of standard brick joints @ 3/8″ wide and 3/4″ deep
  5. Repoint about 15 square feet of rubble stone wall @ 1″ wide and 1-1/4″ deep
  6. Stucco about 6 square feet @ 3/4″ thick
  7. Stucco about 21 square feet of finish coat @ 3/16″ thick

I love working with this mortar. Its soft and buttery and has a much warmer "feel" and look than a Portland. A MUST for historic projects.

LimeWorks is the best! Everyone there was so helpful with advice for my project. Having never done brickwork before, I was definitely going in cold building this hearth, but with much invaluable help from Anthony, my daughter and I did it. Even when I accidentally ordered the wrong color, they advised me how to tint it. I was initially drawn to the ecologic mortar for environmental reasons, and I received a wealth of information in addition to a great product. Much thanks to everyone at LimeWorks!

Easy to use for someone with no mortar experience. I did find it easier to just smear it aggressively into the cracks with a gloved hand since our walls are very lumpy. Smoothed over it with a damp sponge and it blended pretty nicely. Very happy with the mortar and the customer service when I called to ask a few questions before purchase was super helpful/friendly. Tried many different mixes to match our 100 year old lime mortar to no avail. Purchased the sample kit and got the perfect match! Only regret is I didn't find LimeWorks sooner!

  2. Used to repoint as well as rebuild parts of an old (122 yrs) house. Previous owners had used portland cement so we had to chisel that all out and then use this. Worked great and was simple. The only issue is the dang shipping is outrageously expensive….

  3. Ordered the Ecologic Mortar one day and received it the next. Got right to work and discovered it mixed up smoothly and easily. Turned a “specialist” job into a satisfying, affordable DIY project. Staff kindly answered my many questions on the phone, and prices for product and shipping more than fair.

Don’t just wear gloves, wear a good face mask. Even with a mask that lime finds its way up my nose!
